District VI Councilmember Dr. Tyler King requested last week outdoor exercise equipment at North Central Park for military personnel and the public. The designated location inside the park is an area where three pull-up bars are in place, but the Marines said it is not enough. Parks and Recreation Director J.J. Gomez said the military community can benefit from it, as some already use the park during the weekend in the early mornings. “If you go there frequently, on Saturday mornings at 5 a.m., you can see cadets, soldiers and more training out there, and they want something they can work out outdoors,” Gomez said. The section with the three pull-up bars is located in the proposed area, which measures 100 by 50 feet. “There’s a popular spot there at the park where, back when the park was built, a couple of Marines wanted to work out and put a couple of pull-up bars there,” Gomez said. “So, the Marines and the other military agencies train there, and they approached Dr. King and asked him if the city could bring workout stations to the area.” Gomez said that his staff has calculated to have nearly 10 to 15 outdoor exercise stations in that section of the park with a possible canopy over it all to provide shade. He hopes this can help military personnel as well as the public for overall use. The outdoor machines are built from stronger material and may be seen at other parks throughout the city. One location is in a small section of M.S. Ryan Elementary School. “Since this started with the Marines, (City Council) mentioned we can probably name it after the fallen U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. David Lee Espinoza.” Funds for the project would come from either the District VI Park Improvement fees or the District VI Priority Funds, with no current timeline. </div></body>
