Former NL MVP expected to change teams in offseason

One notable MLB veteran appears to have played his final game for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Katie Woo of The Athletic reported Sunday that the Cardinals are expected to part ways with seven-time All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this offseason. Goldschmidt’s contract with St. Louis is about to be up, and the Cardinals are planning to transition into a “reset” in 2025, Woo adds.

Now 37, Goldschmidt has been with the Cardinals ever since they acquired him in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks before the 2019 MLB season. Goldschmidt had a nice run during his six seasons in St. Louis, winning NL MVP in 2022 as well as a Silver Slugger Award and a Gold Glove.

But Goldschmidt, though his power numbers were still there with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs, had a down year overall in 2024. He posted career lows with a .245 batting average and a .713 OPS and is clearly on a decline at this point after 14 MLB seasons.

St. Louis finished the season at a mediocre 83-79 (.512), missing the playoffs for a second straight year. While the Cardinals made out a whole lot better in the Goldschmidt trade than the Dbacks did , it looks like it is finally time for them to move on too.
