Phillies benefit from bizarre replay decision in NLDS Game 1

Major League Baseball’s replay review did not exactly have the best start to the National League Division Series on Saturday.

With two out in the bottom of the 3rd, New York Mets pitcher David Peterson tried to pick Phillies shortstop Trea Turner off first with two outs. Turner was called safe on the field, but replay indicated that first baseman Pete Alonso may have tagged the shortstop before Turner’s hand could get back to first.

The Mets challenged the play, and several FOX replays seemed to show clear daylight between Turner’s hand and first base at the moment Alonso tagged him. Despite that, the call on the field stood, and Turner remained at first. That prompted FOX’s AJ Pierzynski to question what, exactly, the MLB replay center failed to see.

“I don’t know what we’re looking at. Please, somebody tell me what we’re looking at. He’s out,” Pierzynski said.

The Mets ultimately got out of the inning, though it was extended by several pitches after Bryce Harper walked.

As is the case in other sports, MLB replay usually sticks with the call on the field unless there is clear and convincing evidence to overturn. It sure looked like we had that here, but the replay center disagreed. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that has been the case this season.
