An ill-timed Alabama penalty on Saturday seriously hurt the Crimson Tide’s comeback bid late against Tennessee.

Alabama trailed Tennessee 21-17 with under two minutes left at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. With the Crimson Tide facing 3rd-and-7 at their own 33, quarterback Jalen Milroe threw an incomplete pass intended for wide receiver Kendrick Law.

Tennessee defensive back Boo Carter, who was covering Law, taunted the Alabama wideout after the play. In response, Law shoved Carter for getting in his face.

Referees flagged Law for a back-breaking personal foul that pushed Alabama back 15 yards on fourth down. Officials could have opted to dole out offsetting penalties in order to keep the peace. But Carter, who instigated the scuffle, got off free. The Crimson Tide turned over possession on downs after failing to convert on 4th-and-22 from their own 18.

Alabama did get one more chance after keeping Tennessee to a field goal on the ensuing possession. But Milroe threw a game-ending interception on the first play of his team’s next drive.

Alabama fell to Tennessee 24-17, marking the first time the Crimson Tide have lost two games this early in the season since 2007.
