Remembering the TV Show, "In Search of...

    2024-02-05

Lots of those episodes could have been the basis for an Indiana Jones movie.

For years most of my writing was for cartoonists. I did work for some syndicated cartoon strips and websites. A lot of my cartoons were for financial and technical sites. I recently wrote about the responses I get from my work. I found one of the toughest readerships I’ve dealt with was for a site called, How to Geek.

Some of the readers seem to be a bit literal in their thinking. And also protective of Leonard Nimoy. I discovered this when I wrote a cartoon involving Nimoy. Here is the dialogue from the two geeks in the cartoon:

First geek: I wonder what Leonard Nimoy is in search of this time.

    Second geek: A paycheck

    So what was the lesson?

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit in the wind, and you don’t joke about Leonard Nimoy on a geek website. Well despite that, I’m taking a quick look at the In Search of series. I will touch on the subject matter of a few episodes. Here is a link for a list of the episodes:In Search of… (TV series) — Wikipedia

    1: “The Outer Space Connection”

This episode explores the idea that aliens visited the earth in the past, built structures here, and may return. Of course they will. That’s who Motel Six is leaving the lights on for.

    2: “Bigfoot”

This is pretty obvious. This episode considers the possibility of the existence of a half man, half beast creature called Bigfoot. Here in Oklahoma, there is actually a Bigfoot hunting season. No wonder they stay out of sight. Plus, if the creature is half man, if one of them was to be killed, isn’t that half a murder charge?

    3: “Martians”

The idea of Mars being a dying planet because of climate change is examined in this episode. The program discusses the significance of “Drill Baby Drillsigns found on the planet.

    4: “Atlantis”

Ah, the lost empire of Atlantis. This episode considers the possibility of 14 buildings beneath the waters of the Bahamas and a 2000-year-old computer part are remnants of that empire. I can say I could have saved them some trouble. That 2000-year-old part goes to my computer.

    5: “Inca Treasure”

In this episode a camera crew follows a Peruvian excavation party looking for an Inca city that his been lost for 300 years. Apparently, things went downhill after the highway bypassed the city.

    6: “Firewalkers”

Finally, a mystery solved. It turns out Dr. Scholls sells asbestos foot pads. Wait, being told that’s not true. I do believe odor eaters are an option, however.

    7: “Dead Sea Scrolls”

This episode considers why Dead Sea Scrolls are more valuable than Fresh Water Scrolls. Well, maybe not.

    8: “Cloning”

Once again, the subject matter is pretty straightforward. It talks about making copies of humans and thus single-parent human beings. I don’t know about clones, but there a plenty of single parent human beings. I don’t think cloning was necessary for that.

    9: “Lost Vikings”

This episode deals with the descendants of the Viking, Eric the Red. I’m wondering why they called the episode, “Lost Vikings.” Columbus thought he was going to China and ended up in the New World. If anybody was lost, it was Columbus.

    10: “King Tut”

Actually, I learned more about King Tut from Steve Martin. It seems like Tut was suffering from genetic defects that limited his mobility. He actually had trouble walking like an Egyptian.
