The White Sox are getting Better

But the bar was very low.

The White Sox continued to be busy this offseason, making a couple of trades over the weekend. They shipped right-handed relief pitcher, Gregory Santos, to the Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Prelander Berroa and outfielder Zach DeLoach. They also picked up outfielder, Dominic Fletcher from the Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect, Cristian Mena.

In addition, the Sox continued to sign as many cheap free agents as possible, signing outfield, Kevin Pillar to a minor league contract.

    The White Sox are improving

Of course, the problem is they were so bad to begin with. How did the organization get so rotten from the ground up? The level of talent was low enough to be frightening.

The starting pitching is a complete roll of the dice. And the dice are loaded, and not in the Sox favor. The same can be said for the bullpen.

But at least the White Sox should be able to catch the ball in 2024. That’s no small matter.

What do the White Sox look like right now?

The outfield, from left to right looks like Benintendi-Robert Jr. and Fletcher. Kevin Pillar will likely catch on as depth. The same is true of newly acquired Zach DeLoach.

That’s not overwhelming but should be an improvement.

The infield from third to first sizes up as Moncada-DeJong-Lopez-Vaughn. Once again, not great, but better than last year. Plus, help for the left side of the infield looks to be on the way in the form of top minor league prospect shortstop Colson Montgomery and third baseman Bryan Ramos.

The catching corps looks to be a bunch of hitless wonders headed up by free agent signing Maldonado. Maldonado is projected to hit .193 with an OPS of .616, but with 15 homers. If that happens, it would be great.

    What about the pitching?

The Sox are going with a nameless cast of thousands in both their starting rotation, and the bullpen. But I think they will be better than last year. They almost have to be.

I give new GM, Chris Getz, credit for at least seeming to have a plan and if nothing else, throwing a bunch of possibilities out there.

It would be nice if the team would actually spend some money, but that isn’t going to happen. Maybe instead of spending $1 million per free agent on 14 free agents, maybe they should try spending $14 million on one free agent. But that won’t happen.

The Sox seem to be using the MLB waiver wire as their farm system, and sadly, it’s an upgrade.
