    2024-04-01

It wasn't agreat start on either side of town.

A week into the baseball season, and the Chicago major league ballclubs stand at a collective 1–5. While the record doesn’t tell everything, some of our fears seem to have a basis. And yes, the White Sox really will lose 100+ game.

It seems that if Jerry Reinsdorf worked as hard at putting a good team on the field as he did trying to siphon of tax dollars, Sox fans would be much happier

As for the Cubs, there is a nagging feeling that they may have cheaped out of a golden opportunity. Here are ten thoughts on baseball on both sides of Chicago.

1: The loss of Justin Steele for a month or so highlights the Cubs lack of front-end starting pitchers.

Jordan Montgomery would look so good in the Cubs rotation right now. If the Cubs fail to make the playoffs, their cheapness will probably be the reason.

2: Yoan Moncada was seen hustling Saturday.

For some, Moncada has been the poster boy for all that is wrong with the White Sox. Moncada actually turned on the jets to turn a drive into the right field corner into a triple Saturday. We’ll see how long that lasts. The Sox do look more energetic, but the burden of carrying a ton of losses may eventually slow them down.

3: Chris Morel’s bat is the real thing.

And so is his bad glove. I doubt he will make the whole season as the Cubs’ regular third baseman.

4: Who had Game 3 in the, “When Does Eloy Jimenez Go on the IL List?”

The Sox offense was marginal at best. Losing Jimenez was both painful and predictable.

5: Kyle Hendricks looks like a poor investment.

Kyle has had a wonderful career with the Cubs, but he does look washed. He’s making $16.5 million this season, with a $14.5 luxury tax hit. It seems like that money could have been better used.

6: The White Sox starting rotation may be better than expected.

Opening day starter, Garrett Crochet, was great, and Eric Fedde was also good in his White Sox debut. Even Mike Soroka wasn’t terrible. The White Sox losses may not be as lopsided as last year, but there will be a lot of them.

7: Michael Busch is off to a slow start but is taking his walks.

Long-term, he will probably okay, at least offensively. If not, perhaps Matt Mervis gets another look.

8: The big winner in the Tigers sweep of the White Sox was Jason Benetti.

Jason found a new home with the Tigers, where the games will probably be much more fun to call. New Sox play by play guy, John Schriffen, was okay, but not in the class of Benetti. Schriffen’s constant rah-rah approach, while pleasing to Jerry, “Leather” Reinsdorf will probably wear on Sox fans during a likely 100+ loss season.

9: Michael Tauchman is a better player than I initially thought.

Tauchman’s stats aren’t gaudy, but he’s solid defensively and consistently gets good at bats. He’s a great depth piece.

10: Whatever chance the White Sox had to generate early season momentum was lost by losing three one-run games.

The concept of losing cleaner will wear thin before long.
