Looks Like the Bears Finally Got Their QB Situation Right

    2024-06-24

    And it's about time.

As a long-time Bears fan, I’ve seen a lot of bad QB play. Personally, I remember guys who were really bad at the position going back to the 60s. Even in more recent years the team has made some choices that were just shockingly bad. The Mike Glennon signing comes to mind.

Before the 2018 season, the Bears signed Mike to a three-year, $45 million contract with $18.5 million guaranteed. That raises a number of questions. For example, what did they see in Glennon to move them to pay him that much money.

Mike is 6'7" and really lumbering. When he was with the Bears, they always looked like they were about to run the Statue of Liberty Play all the time. Because Glennon looked like a statue.

While Mike was 6'7,” it seemed like two feet of that was neck. I’m not sure where is release point was. I mean his throwing release point. His Bears release point was March 18, 2018. He played the first four games in the 2017 season and then was benched and never took another snap for the Bears. Nice work if you can get it.

I’ll delve into the history of terrible Bears QBs another time. Now I’ll fast forward to 2024.

Some of us were seduced by QB mediocrity

Justin Fields is an amazing athlete who put together some tremendous highlight reels. In addition, Fields is an easy guy to root for. He is a standup guy who took responsibility and seemed to be getting better. And his teammates loved him.

In addition, he was put in an almost impossible situation in Chicago. But that doesn’t make him a good NFL QB.

The Bears could have gotten a boatload of picks if they had traded the first overall pick and the right to draft Caleb Williams. I have to admit, that seemed like a pretty good idea. But I was wrong.

Fields problems seem to be following him to Pittsburgh

Reports out of Pittsburgh indicate Fields is still having trouble processing the field quickly. I’m not sure how much of that can be taught. I still hope Justin puts it together for the Steelers. Props to Bears’ GM, Ryan Poles, for getting him to the best position he could.

Meanwhile, Caleb Williams is making friends and influencing people

While D. J. Moore was a huge proponent of Justin Fields, he is now on board with Caleb Williams. As is pretty much everybody in the Bears organization. He’s also done a great job of winning over Bears fans. Including me.

Caleb Williams may prove to be the greatest QB in Bears history. But then again, Moe was the smartest stooge.

Imho unless he’s matured a lot, the Bears aren’t going to be happy. I’ve seen him dog it in college, and get easily frustrated by a big pass rush. I agree he’s very talented, se we’ll see.
