Facts About Jack Palance
He was great as a "low down "Yankee liar." Jack was great as a villain. To me, his signature role was that of the gunfighter, Jack Wilson, in the classic movie, Shane. Jack was also great in City Slickers, and he could do a lot of pushups in his old age. I knew he had what I will call an “interesting look,’ but felt like I had forgotten a lot of stuff about him.
Facts About Pat Garrett
In some ways, his life is more interesting than that of Billy the Kid. The general consensus is Pat Garrett is the man who shot and killed Billy the Kid. Years later, Garrett was shot and killed and the circumstances around his death are still under debate.
Bulls' "Ring of Honor" Ceremony Turns Disastrous
And why am I not surprised. Friday night the Chicago Bulls tried to honor some of the key players in their distant glorious past. And, as has generally been true of their more recent past with anything associated with the Bulls, it turned out terribly. And it was somewhat predictably. First of all, the biggest players didn’t show.
Satire: Casino Ads Take an Interesting Turn
I’m not a gambler. I’ve heard the stories of co-workers who have gone to a casino and will then talk about how they’ve won various amounts of money. For example, I had a boss that said she won something like $1,500. But she never talked about how much she lost while trying to win. And that’s how casinos advertise.
After a Slow Start, the Cubs' Jed Hoyer is Really Cooking
Some of Scott Boras' clients just lost some leverage. After a slow start to the offseason, the Cubs have added potential three pieces to their 2024 team. The additions include a starting pitcher, a reliever and a first/third baseman/DH. Color me impressed.
Satire: 12 Things to Do When You're Old
I hope the excitement isn't too much for me. As we get older we find ourselves making concessions to old age. For example, I played full-court basketball into my early 50s. Now I try to catch an NBA playoff game without going to sleep.I find even my sense of taste is diminishing. That’s why I find pastries and sweets, in general, to be so appealing. So I tell myself. While things I’ve found to be enjoyable in the past are becoming distant memories I’m finding ways to compensate.
Facts About Vincent Price
The majority of his movies weren't horror stories. While Vincent Price was considered a master of horror movies his career was diverse. Price also displayed a knack for comedy. As his career moved along, he did a number of commercials and did a lot of roles that could perhaps best be called “odd.”
Facts About the TV Show, "Death Valley Days"
It was a nice comnbination of westerns and history. I like western history. I’ve read a lot of books about the subject and enjoy offbeat, quirky stories from that setting. Death Valley Days was a good union of those elements. While I didn’t find the production elements of the series to be all that good, the series was entertaining, nonetheless.
Facts About "The Omega Man"
Was Charlton Heston the last man standing. During the late 60s and early 70s Charlton Heston did a string of post-apocalyptic movies. I’ve already discussed Soylent Green, now it’s on to The Omega Man. Having seen The Omega Man years ago, and I am Legend not quite as many years ago, I prefer The Omega Man.
Facts About Donna Summer
Her songs were not without controversy. Back in the days when disco was at its peak there was one undisputed queen of the genre, Donna Summer. She was prolific when it came music output, but her personal life had a lot of turmoil. There were awards galore during her life, but they didn’t necessarily lead to happiness.
Facts About Rory Calhoun
He may have been the original Troy Donoghue. If you are an old fan of westerns, you probably remember Rory Calhoun. If you’re not, there’s a good chance the name doesn’t ring a bell. I’ve watched a few movies starring, Rory Calhoun, but not in a long time. They used to pop up quite a bit on The Late Show. or the Late, Late Show when I was growing up.
Bears End Their Season with a Thud and No Clarity
Their 17–9 loss to the Packers didn’t help Eberflus, Getsy or Fields. The Bears were full of optimism going into their season finale against the Packers. That optimism turned to bewilderment after the Packers handed them their collective rear end in a 17–9 Packers’ win. The game wasn’t as close as the score would indicate.
Satire: Is Your Relationship About to Crash and Burn?
Look for these telltale signs. I can’t believe how many people have asked me for relationship advice. I believe the actual number is zero. But, I can't let that stop me. No telling how many people out there can benefit from my powers of observation. Or at least read this story while the meter is running.
Opinion: How Valuable is Exposure?
Not as valuable as actually getting paid. Depending on the type of writing you do you may have someone offer to give you exposure for your work. There may be occasions when that could benefit you, but generally speaking I think the expression that comes to mind is, “Run Forrest, Run!”. Or maybe, “Danger Will Robinson, Danger!” So what’s the danger? You probably won’t see anything for your work. If you’re writing for fun, that’s okay. If your thinking of writing as a career, it likely won’t be much of a boost. At least that’s been my experience.
Facts About the TV Show, "Moonlighting"
It was great, but volatile. It some ways, Moonlighting was like a meteorite. It shown brightly for a short period of time before burning out. It was great for a while, but really hard to sustain. Bruce Willis was ascending, and Cybill Shepherd was great, but the concoction was somewhat volatile, so had a relatively short run.
Facts About Desi Arnaz
He was a great entertainer and businessman. While Lucille Ball gets most of the credit for the success of, I Love Lucy, the rest great cast also played a large role. I’ve already written about William Frawley, but I’ve always thought Desi Arnaz’s part in the show has been greatly overlooked. Not only was he great as Ricky Ricardo, but he was also a great businessman.
Facts About Babylon
It seems to be gone without a trace. To some, the word “Babylon” evokes feelings of mystery. Babylon was a world power at its peak but is now rubble. And its fate was actually prophesied in the Bible. The Bible even prophesied that Cyrus the Mede would conquer Babylon in Isaiah, chapters 44 and 45.
Facts About Jerry Reed
Generally speaking, I’m not a big country western music guy, but there are a few exceptions. In the past I’ve mentioned Roy Clark and Johnny Cash as exceptions. Jerry Reed also belongs in that group. Not only do I enjoy his music, but I also find him to be a likeable performer.
Facts About "The Sting"
It was Newman and Redford at their best. It seems a shame that Paul Newman and Robert Redford only starred in two movies together. Both Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting are two of my all-time favorites. I would have loved to have seem them work together some more.
Facts About Mr. T
He still looks formidable. The 80s had some memorable characters. One of the most memorable was Mr. T. Regardles if he was part of the A-Team, insulting Adrian Balboa, or whooping on Rocky Balboa he made an impression. It seems that Mr. T not only played a tough guy, he was one. He’s had a lot going on in his life. So, here are some things you didn’t know about Mr. T.
