Satire: Do You Have These Pet Peeves?
These things are just irritating. We all have things that get under our skin. Some of these things are pretty universal whereas others are unique to us as individuals. I’ve listed some things that bug me. See if some of these things show up on your list too.
Opinion: The Argument for the Bears Keeping Justin Fields
For a period of time after the Bears’ season ended, sentiment as to whether the Bears should keep Justin Fields or draft Caleb Williams was pretty much divided. However, recently, the sentiment among Chicago media types and fans seems to have swung towards drafting Williams.
Satire: Athlete Endorsed Fragrances
Aaron Judge may have started something. Ralph Lauren has a new fragrance out. It’s called Polo Est. 67. He has Aaron Judge as the spokesperson. Many wisecracks ensued. My take was “Polo Est. 67, take a whiff.” Baseball fans among you know what I mean. I decided to take things a little further and picked ten more athletes and some fragrances they could represent. Here we go.
Satire: Thought for the Day
Remember this in public settings. Over the years, I’ve seen variations of, “Thought for the Day” programs. Generally, the thoughts are meant to be profound, or at least useful. Personally, I try to post to my blog every day. I’ve found the hardest part of doing this is having an idea that will sustain 400+ words.
Facts about "The Twilight Zone"
It was innovative to say the least. The Twilight Zone was any many ways ahead of its time. The series creator, Rod Serling, wanted to address deep subjects that were often considered taboo by network censors. To do that Rod had to be really creative in his writing.
Oklahoma Ghost Towns: Picher
It has quite a backstory. Living in Oklahoma presents the opportunity for lots of little-known backstories. The state seems to have an abnormal amount of ghost towns. Often, they come with interesting stories. Take Picher, Oklahoma for example. Not only is it a ghost town it’s one of the deadliest places in the country.
Opinion: It's Hard to Be Optimistic about the White Sox
The White Sox were absolutely abysmal last season. Couple an organization devoid of talent with an owner who is perhaps the most tone-deaf owner in baseball and throw in a manger who seems clearly over his head and optimism becomes hard to come by. But I’ll give it a try.
Legends of Route 66: Two Guns, Arizona
The town has plenty of colorful folklore and lots of starnge facts. When I’m at my computer thumping out drivel to be consumed by perhaps dozens of people, I often watch YouTube. I watch a lot of sports content, as well as entertainment nostalgia and historical stuff. Information relating to the fabled Route 66 falls into that latter category. There are probably hundreds of old tourist sites lying in ruins when interstate highways made parts of Route 66 obsolete. Two Gun Arizona is one of them.
Satire: This Week in History, March 11-17
Here's a quick and quirky look back. Years ago, when I was writing a comedy service for radio stations I did a this day in history bit. I’m obviously not trying to do anything heavy with this but I’m sure it will make some people mad. So here some events that happened during this week in history.
Opinion: WSCR is a Good Sports Talk Listen
It's gotten better over the years. During the week I listen to sports talk radio. A lot of it. Mostly WSCR, the Score out of Chicago. I’ve listened off and on for years, but I believe their lineup is now the best it’s been in the almost twenty years I’ve listened to it. Here's a quick look at their lineup.
Satire: It's Time for Some New Acadamy Awards Categories
I, like many Americans, no longer watch the Acadamy Awards ceremony. It’s generally speaking, pompous, overblown, and just boring. Except for what will be known as, ‘The Incident” from a couple of years ago. Most of us have seen, The Slap Seen Around the World.” Yes, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a tasteless joke about Smith's wife.
Opinion: Cubs 2024 Team is Taking Shape
But there will be changes between now and September. The Cubs cut 12 guys from their major league roster Friday. Included were some notable names. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ben Brown were assigned to AAA Iowa. Matt Shaw and Owen Caissie were reassigned to the minor league camp. All four of those guys will probably make their way back to Chicago before the year is out.
Facts About "The Monkees"
They were probably more talented than they are given credit for. I wasn’t a huge fan of The Monkees during the 60s, but they’ve kind of grown on me over the years. Actually, their music in particular as grown on me. Going into this project, I wasn’t sure how much of their music actually was made by them, but at this pointy in life, I don’t much care.
Satire: Senior-Proofing the White House
Changes should be considered. A long time ago, in a faraway galaxy, it was possible to make jokes about politicians and then not have to duck for cover. It was actually possibleto point out something was actually funny or ironic, just for humor’s sake, and not have it be construed as a political statement.
Facts About Harvey Korman
He was a great foil to Tim Conway. For many of us, when we hear the name Harvey Korman, we think of The Carol Burnett Show. Specifically, we think of Harvey being broken up by Tim Conway. Those were perhaps the most entertaining moments from that classic show.
Satire: Ways to Look Smarter
You don't have to be smart to look smart. Let’s face it, we are not all brainiacs. But we don’t have to tell the world that.If we keep our mouths shut and don’t dress and groom ourselves like morons, it can be our secret. So, here are some ways we can actually look smarter.Who knows, by not looking like an idiot, maybe we won’t act like one.
Facts About "Three Dog Night"
They were probably the hottest group in the world when I was in high school. When -I listen to satellite radio, the station I’m most likely to listen to is the 70s channel. Or maybe Yacht Rock, but I digress. Yacht Rock played a lot of 70s music. The point of this is Three Dog Night might have been the kings of 70s music. They were so popular, I even had some of their records.
