The National Weather Service forecast a 50% chance of rain on July 5, the result of thunderstorms moving through the region.

But less than a tenth of an inch was expected to fall on Las Cruces, in line with historical precipitation levels which saw about 5 inches of rainfall in July 2023. NWS forecasted continuing possibilities of rain through Sunday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) monsoon outlook for 2024 showed New Mexico leaning below for average rainfall this monsoon season. The monsoon season in New Mexico started on June 15 and will continue through September.

Despite the outlook, Doña Ana County reminded residents that it pays to be prepared and again offered residents free sandbags for pick up.
