Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham plans public safety town hall in Las cruces

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will travel to Las Cruces Thursday to host a town hall on public safety.

The event was announced Monday, July 23 via news release from the Governor's office, stating she sought to engage the public on the topic.

“Ensuring the safety and security of every New Mexican remains my top priority,” said Lujan Grisham. “The town hall in Las Cruces this Thursday is an opportunity to hear directly from New Mexicans grappling with the state's crime problem and collaborate as a community on effective strategies to enhance public safety statewide.”

The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25 at the Las Cruces Convention Center located at 680 E. University Ave. The event is free and open to the public. A livestream of the town hall will be available on the Governor's Facebook page .

Public safety a continuing theme for Lujan Grisham

A special session of the New Mexico Legislature ended after just five hours July 18, a disappointment to Lujan Grisham who called the session for lawmakers to discuss a slate of bills focused on public safety.

Lujan Grisham asked lawmakers to consider proposals to enhance punishment for felons in possession of weapons; consider competency and involuntary commitment legislation; criminalize loitering on medians; mandate reporting of crime data statewide by all agencies.

Instead the Legislature passed just one bill: a $103 million piece of legislation meant to support recovery from the Salt Fork and Salt Fires in Lincoln County and the Mescalero Apache Reservation; fund assisted outpatient treatment programs for New Mexico's Administrative Office of the Courts; and pay for the special session.
