Las Cruces flyweight Amy Salinas, El Paso heavyweight Marcos Duran set for fights Saturday

Las Cruces flyweight Amy Salinas never backs down from a challenge.

Saturday night will be no different as the 6-5 Salinas takes on 9-1 Yadira Bustillos of Las Vegas, Nevada at the El Paso County Coliseum.

For much of her pro career, Salinas has fought opponents with winning records. Three of her five losses have been by split decision.

“I love the challenge of fighting tough opponents and Saturday is a fight I’m looking forward to,” said the 23-year-old Salinas, who attended Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces. “I work hard every day in the gym to be better. I just have to step up and fight my best Saturday.”

Salinas was a successful amateur boxer with more than a 100 fights and she won multiple championships.

“I still love the sport. I still have goals I want to meet,” said Salinas after Thursday’s public workout at Warriors Edge Gym. "Saturday is a big fight and I'm ready to go. My opponent is tough, but I know I can compete at a high level."

El Paso heavyweight to make debut

Marcos Duran, who trains at Warriors Edge Gym in East El Paso, makes his pro debut at heavyweight against fellow debuter Enrique Martinez of Levelland, Texas.

The 22-year-old Duran, who graduated from Mountain View High School, looks to make an imperssion in his first fight after a dozen amateur fights.

“The time was right to turn pro. I feel good and I feel good about the progress I am making,” said Duran, who was a multi-sport athlete in high school, including football and track and field.
