Las Cruces Public Schools will institute a clear bag policy for football, baseball, softball and soccer games at its Field of Dreams athletic complex this year. District administration believes the new policy will "expedite security lines and enhance public safety," according to a news release.

The policy will follow the same guidelines New Mexico State uses for its athletic events, which forbids non-clear bags and bags larger than a 12-inch-by-6-inch size. One-gallon, clear zipper bags and small, non-clear clutch bags smaller than a 4.5-inch-by-6.5-inch size will both be allowed. Fans can bring one approved bag and one small clutch bag per person.

Coolers, briefcases, backpacks, drawstring bags, luggage, computer and camera bags, and purses larger than a clutch bag are among the items prohibited in this policy. Exceptions will be made for medical equipment in "bags appropriate to the size of the medical supplies."

The policy doesn't affect student-athletes who have district-issued team bags.

The Field of Dreams plays host to LCPS' four high schools, Las Cruces High, Mayfield, Centennial and Organ Mountain. The first game under the new policy will be between Las Cruces and Mayfield at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23.
