Las Cruces defensive back Isaac Gomez voted Sun-News Athlete of the Week

Las Cruces defensive back Isaac Gomez has been voted the Sun-News Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 19-24.

Every week, the Las Cruces Sun-News will nominate several athletes for its Athlete of the Week award. The award highlights the best performances from Las Cruces-area schools from the previous week.

Gomez was one of six nominees from Las Cruces, Centennial, Organ Mountain and Gadsden. Fellow nominees were Gomez's teammate Daniel Amaro, Centennial's Zaiden Davis and Jordan Lucas, Organ Mountain's Riley Test and Gadsden's Alfredo Andrade.

Gomez won a majority of the vote at 50.76% with 36,543 votes. He was a key defensive player for the Bulldawgs last Friday against Mayfield, recording a sack and an interception return for a touchdown in a 50-7 win over the Trojans. Gomez was one of two Las Cruces players with a pick-6 in the game, with the other coming from fellow defensive back Devin Alba.

"Isaac is a great athlete and a great playmaker," said Bulldawgs coach Mark Lopez. "He's an even better human being."

Gomez's efforts helped Las Cruces start the season 1-0. The Bulldawgs continue their season on the road against Volcano Vista (0-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday.
