Organ Mountain has hired Randy McBroom as its new boys' basketball coach, the school announced Wednesday. He replaces Rocky Gonzales, who resigned on Sept. 5 for personal reasons.

McBroom is currently listed as a history teacher on Organ Mountain's website. He last coached at Portales, where he compiled a 182-138 record from 2012-24.

McBroom was an assistant for Portales on its boys' basketball and football teams before becoming the former's head coach, where he was named 2017 New Mexico Boys Basketball Assistant of the Year and was part of the Portales teams that won the 2016 and 2019 4A state football championships. He earned his bachelor's degree in social studies and master's degree in physical education from Eastern New Mexico in 2006 and 2015, respectively.

McBroom takes over a team that reached the 5A state championship game last season under Gonzales, where the Knights fell to Volcano Vista. Organ Mountain is expected to begin its season on Dec. 7 with a road game against Atrisco Heritage.
