The Weekends With Adele residency was originally set to debut at the start of 2022, but after much consideration, the singer decided to postpone the shows until everything was slated to run smoothly. “Listen, I’m so sorry, but my show ain’t ready,” she previously said in a video. “We’ve tried absolutely everything that we can to put it together in time and for it to be good enough for you, but we’ve been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and Covid. Half my crew, half my team are down with Covid — they still are, and it’s been impossible to finish the show, and I can’t give you what I have right now and I’m gutted.” The 34-date residency was officially back on November 18, 2022, where Adele emotionally greeted fans who’d been patiently awaiting her performance.
“I tried my hardest,” she said. “It just would have been a really half-assed show, and I can’t do that. People will see straight through me, up on stage being like, ‘She doesn’t want to be doing this.’ And, I’ve never done anything like that in my life. I’m not going to start now, you know? I’m obviously gutted.” In an Elle cover story, Adele’s manager Jonathan Dickins explained the “Rolling in the Deep” singer’s perfectionism. “With her, everything’s about authenticity. For her to go out and perform a show she’s not happy with would be a lie to the fans.” She called the moment that she decided to cancel “the worst moment in my career, by far.”
