Avril Lavigne answered the age-old question, “Can exes be friends?” over the weekend when she invited her ex-husband, Sum 41 ’s Deryck Whibley, to the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Lavigne is currently on tour promoting the upcoming release of the singer-songwriter’s greatest hits album, which will be dropping June 21. Fans attending Saturday’s show expected to be treated with Lavigne’s Pop Punk anthems, such as “Girlfriend,” and “Complicated,” but they weren’t expecting a duet of Sum 41’s “In Too Deep” with Whibley.

“Tonight we have a special guest, and he plays guitar in one of my favorite bands, and your favorite bands,” Lavigne said as she welcomed Whibley to the stage.

After dating for a couple of years, Whibley proposed to Lavigne in 2005, and the pair tied the knot a year later in California. However, in 2009, Lavigne filed for divorce from the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Sum 41. “I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship,” Lavigne wrote on her website at the time of the couple’s separation.

Lavigne and Whibley’s reunion at the “Sk8er Boi” singer’s recent show proved how their friendship has endured 15 years since their split. The two seem to be supportive of their respective careers, which like their friendship, are still going strong.

Following Lavigne’s performance in Las Vegas, she will be heading overseas to Europe, playing shows from Czechia to Spain. She will then make her return to North America, first stopping for performances in her home and native land of Canada before continuing the tour throughout the United States.

Whibley and Sum 41 are on the road as well for their farewell tour in celebration of the band’s eighth and final album, Heaven :x: Hell, which dropped in March. While dreaded F-words such as “farewell” and “final” are being used to describe Sum 41, musicians are constantly coming out of retirement, so fans can always hold on to a glimmer of hope.

Even if Sum 41 won’t be done for good, fans still shouldn’t miss upcoming opportunities to see the Pop Punk band this year. There’s even a possibility Whibley could take the stage with Lavigne yet again because both artists will be featured at the Rock For People festival in Czechia coming up on June 14.
