Nevada - the home of Las Vegas and the gambling capital of the world - is the US state with the most problem gamblers, findings show.
Data from responsible gambling experts at RG shows one in 1,766 people living in Nevada are problem gamblers. With its myriad of casinos, particularly in Las Vegas, the state has the highest rate of problem gamblers in the US.
The research analyzed the average number of monthly Google searches in each state for over 100 terms related to gambling addiction, including "how to beat a gambling addiction" and "gambling hotline." The number of searches in each state was compared to the population to determine which state has the most problem gamblers per 100,000 citizens.

Nevada
Nevada has the highest rate of problem gamblers, with one in 1,766 people having issues with gambling. Its 24/7 gambling opportunities, high-stakes betting, and culture that celebrates gambling could all contribute to this statistic. Gambling has been legal in the state since 1931.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island is second, with 40.6 monthly searches per 100,000 people, which is one in 2,463. Despite its small size, the state has a substantial number of problem gamblers. There are two full-service casinos in the state, which are both owned and operated by Bally’s corporation. The Twin River Casino officially opened in 2007 in Lincoln, followed by the Tiverton Casino in 2018.
Delaware
Next on the list is Delaware, with 39.98 searches per 100,000 residents, one in 2,501. The state has three racinos, combining racetracks with gambling facilities. Delaware was also one of the first states to legalize online gambling, which could play a role in its high rate of problem gamblers. The ease of access to gambling platforms could make it challenging for those with addictions to avoid temptation.
Pennsylvania
In fourth place is Pennsylvania , with 38.93 searches per 100,000 people. This is equal to one in 2,568 people. The state legalized casinos in 2004, and iGaming was legalized in 2017. In total, there are 17 casinos in the state, offering ample gambling opportunities for its residents.
North Dakota
With 36.46 monthly Google searches per 100,000 citizens, North Dakota ranks fifth. One in 2,743 people in the state are searching for help. In this state, betting on horse and dog racing events is legal, but the operation of casinos is restricted to Native American reservations. Online gambling is also illegal in the state. Despite the restrictions in place, North Dakota remains among the states with the most gambling addictions.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts is sixth, with 36.25 monthly Google searches per 100,000 people, which is the same as one in 2,759. The state has three large casinos, including Encore Boston Harbor and MGM Springfield. These establishments all provide a variety of gambling options and entertainment, attracting both casual and habitual gamblers . Online casinos are not legal in the state, however, it is legal to bet on professional and college sports.
Michigan
Next up is Michigan , with 34.71 monthly Google searches per 100,000 citizens. The state offers a diverse range of gambling options, including Detroit's commercial casinos, Native American tribal casinos, as well as online gambling and sports betting, which was made legal in 2019.
New Jersey
New Jersey ranks eighth, with 34.66 monthly Google searches per 100,000 people, which is one in 2,885. The state is home to Atlantic City, a major gambling destination. The state's legalization of online gambling in 2013 and sports betting in 2017 further contributed to the gambling options people in the state have.
Connecticut
In ninth place is Connecticut , with 34.56 monthly Google searches per 100,000 citizens. This is the same as one in 2,894. Connecticut hosts two of the largest casinos in the world: Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino. These massive entertainment complexes attract millions of visitors annually and provide a lot of gambling opportunities for locals.
Illinois
Tenth is Illinois , with 34.3 monthly Google searches per 100,000 residents, which is equal to one in 2,915. The state has an extensive network of riverboat casinos, racetracks, and video gaming terminals. The legalization of sports betting in 2019 and the expansion of casino licenses in recent years likely increased the number of people who gamble in the state, inevitably increasing the number of problem gamblers.
Idaho
On the other hand, the state with the smallest number of monthly Google searches regarding problem gambling is Idaho, with just 14.68 monthly searches per 100,000 citizens, which is one in 6,812. Closely following are Utah and South Carolina.

“For those with gambling addictions, tackling the problem requires a multifaceted approach. Firstly, acknowledging the problem is crucial. Seek support from loved ones and consider joining support groups like Gamblers Anonymous, where you can share experiences and receive guidance.
“Professional help, such as therapy or counseling, can help you find strategies to manage urges and address underlying issues. Setting financial boundaries, such as limiting access to money used for gambling, can prevent further financial harm.
“Additionally, engaging in alternative activities and hobbies can help redirect focus and reduce the time spent gambling. It is important to remember that overcoming addiction is a journey, and seeking help is a strong first step.”
