Grand jury witness: Man accused of ‘munching’ on victim’s face in Downtown Las Vegas murder; ‘The dude was eating him’

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man accused of killing a man and “munching” on his face in Downtown Las Vegas faces additional charges of mayhem and attempted murder, according to court records.

In all, Colin Czech, 29, now faces three charges in the murder of Kenneth Brown as well as an attempted murder charge for trying to kill a man who sweeps the floor at 7-Eleven “in the same manner as he did” Brown, the court’s charging document says.

Police arrested Czech on April 28 and is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. In May, a judge found Czech competent to stand trial.

On the day of Czech’s first court appearance in May, Czech’s attorney – Chief Deputy Public Defender David Westbrook – told a judge, “I’ve spoken to him and I’ve determined that he’s incompetent.”

“Competency is fluid,” Westbrook told the 8 News Now Investigators. “And a lot of it is medication-based.”

Westbrook met Czech the morning of that court appearance and insisted that Czech “was absolutely 100% incompetent,” when speaking to 8 News Now Investigators. The competency court judge in Clark County disagreed, opening the door for the Clark County District Attorney to bring the case to the grand jury and seek indictment.

“Since then he’s been medicated and two doctors have found him to be competent,” Westbrook added.

Westbrook also said he was unaware of last Friday’s grand jury indictment until the next day.

“I don’t know what evidence was said before the grand jury,” Westbrook said Monday morning.

At that time, the transcript of the grand jury proceedings had not yet been released. But Monday afternoon, the 8 News Now Investigators obtained that transcript and, in it, seven witnesses describe Czech’s actions in greater detail than previous documents made available.

According to documents, an employee at the 7-Eleven at the intersection of Charleston and Las Vegas boulevards saw Czech outside the store after 3:00 a.m. Czech then allegedly tried to attack a man, identified as Christopher Jordan, who the employee said sometimes sweeps the floors at the store.

Somehow, Jordan was able to escape from Czech that morning.

“And did Mr. Jordan, was he able to get himself on top of the individual in the maroon shirt [Czech]?” the prosecutor asked. “Yes,” the employee responded noting that the two were wrestling until Jordan got away and went back into the 7-Eleven.

Czech eventually left and went to a different convenience store on Charleston Boulevard, according to court records. Police said Czech then went across the street to a bus stop where he used a weapon to kill Brown and then started to eat his face. Witnesses at the grand jury corroborate that account.

“The dude was eating him,” one witness testified. “He was eating his face, like just munching.”

Court documents indicate Czech was found with blood in his teeth and hair and that the victim’s ear was found on the sidewalk nearby.

“There is a $5.00 bill on the ground and on top of that there is an ear,” a Metro crime scene analyst testified before the grand jury.

Czech is due in court for his first post-indictment hearing on July 17.
