LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released its Use of Force and Vehicle Pursuit Annual five-year report Thursday, detailing efforts to make changes and improvements from 2019 to 2023.

The report details officer-involved shootings and other use of force incidents, while also detailing how officers work to prevent them.

The department said it’s an effort to lower response times while keeping LVMPD personnel and citizens safe.

Statistics released Thursday show officer-involved shootings were down in 2023 from previous years.

LVMPD reported 10 officer-involved shootings among 1,487,536 events generated in 2023. This was down from 14 recorded in 2022 and a five-year high of 19 recorded in 2020.

Of the shootings recorded in LVMPD jurisdiction in 2023, 50% were deadly, according to statistics released.

Location was also addressed in the report, with the Southeast Area Command seeing the most police shootings since 2019, followed by Downtown Area Command.

Use of non-deadly force to de-escalate situations was also recorded, with 947 instances in 2023, up from 2022.

Non-deadly force incidents included K9 officers deployed, electronic devices like tasers, or even hand tactics used instead of firearms.

Vehicle pursuits were also addressed, with changes made to the number of officers approved and movements to evaluate case by case.

In all, LVMPD called the report an effort to emphasize the importance of ethics, values, and professionalism while officers do their best to make sure Southern Nevadans are secure.
