LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Wildfires are popping up around Nevada and northwest Arizona as firefighters work against dry conditions.

    • In Nevada, the Whisky Canyon fire was discovered on Monday in Lander County in the central part of the state. The fire has grown to 1,246 acres and is considered 20% contained, according to an update around noon Tuesday. Officials list the cause of the fire as “natural,” burning through brush that’s about 2 feet tall, as well as foot-high fields of dry grass. It’s burning on private land about 13 miles south of Battle Mountain along Interstate 80. There are structures in the area, but none are immediately threatened, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

    • The Badger Fire in Elko County is currently at 100 acres on U.S. Forest Service land along SR225 between Wild Horse Reservoir and Owyhee.
    • Estimates have been reduced on the Sunrise Fire, initially reported Monday as 10-15 acres with high spread potential in Douglas County east of Minden. That fire is now described as 5.3 acres.
    • The Stirling Fire north of Pahrump in Nye County was contained Tuesday morning after burning about 18 acres since it was discovered on Monday.

In northwest Arizona, a 100-acre fire isn’t far from the Nevada border.

    • The Butcher Fire is burning about 5 miles north of Dolan Springs — about 35 miles north of Kingman. Fire crews have been sent to the scene, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management reported at about noon on Tuesday.
