A 36-year-old man in Nevada has been arrested and accused of killing his girlfriend, who was on the hood of his car when he allegedly accelerated and stopped multiple times as he tried to throw her from the vehicle . Alejandro Cisneros was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with one count of open murder in the death of 28-year-old Alondra Rivera, authorities announced.

Cisneros reportedly told police that after flinging Rivera from the car, he assumed she was unharmed because she was a “strong woman.”

According to a news release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers and emergency medical personnel at about 11:27 p.m. on June 28, responded to a 911 call regarding someone laying in the road in the area of East Yuma Avenue and South Frank Street. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders located an adult female — later identified as Rivera — unresponsive and in the roadway. She was pronounced dead on the scene by medics.

“Through the course of the investigation, detectives determined the victim was in a verbal altercation with an unknown person in an SUV while on the hood of the car,” police wrote in their initial release. “The SUV then came to several abrupt stops causing the female to fall off and hit her head on the roadway. The SUV then fled the area prior to officers’ arrival. This is an ongoing investigation.”

Several days later, police said they identified the driver of the SUV as Cisneros and placed him under arrest.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS, the person who called 911 told the emergency dispatcher that Rivera was on the hood of the car asking for her purse when Cisneros allegedly accelerated the vehicle in a manner that led to her being thrown off the car.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office determined that Rivera’s cause of death was blunt force trauma while her manner of death reportedly remains listed as “pending.”

Investigators obtained surveillance footage which reportedly appeared to show that Cisneros, “made deliberate accelerations and hard braking with [Rivera] on the hood of the SUV at least twice, in a calculated attempt to remove her from the vehicle.”

Cisneros made several attempts to turn himself in after learning of Rivera’s death, KLAS reported. He called police first on June 30, but the department did not get the call because it was a Sunday. He called back again the following day and asked to speak with a detective, but it was unclear what came from that attempt.

Cisneros also went to the Clark County Detention Center and attempted to turn himself in, but he was reportedly turned away and told that authorities did not have a warrant out for his arrest.

Following his eventual arrest, Cisneros allegedly told police that he and Rivera were arguing when she was on the hood of the car and he was just trying to get her off.

“At some point during the struggle, Alondra threw a drink at Alejandro,” police reportedly wrote in a probable cause affidavit. “He also claimed she bit his thumb but could not explain how or when that occurred. Alejandro admitted to grabbing her by the hair during this altercation as well.”

The document also stated that Cisneros “provided the excuse he did not want to go to jail for domestic violence and claimed he did not know [Rivera] was injured or dead until the following day.”

“He believed she would be fine because she was a strong woman,” the affidavit reportedly stated.

Cisneros is currently being held in the Clark County Detention Center without bond, records show. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 1.
