LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — Growing to more than 15,000 acres since it was discovered on July 23, the Stockade Canyon Fire is Nevada’s largest active wildfire. Meanwhile, the Park Fire is now the fifth-largest fire in California history.

It’s burning north of Reno in Washoe County and it’s currently only 15% contained, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Skies have cleared out in Las Vegas after a weekend that brought smoke in from Southern California. Smoke from those fires is now north of the Las Vegas valley, blowing into central Nevada.

Wildfires in Nevada have been active this year, but not to the extent of California wildfires. The number of burned acres in California so far this year is about double the totals for each of the past two years. California saw its worst wildfire years in 2020 and 2021. More than 4.3 million acres burned in California in 2020.

At 383,619 acres, the Park Fire is now California’s fifth-largest wildfire on record.

The Stockade Canyon Fire was caused by lightning, fueled by grass, sagebrush and juniper on BLM land. An estimated 237 personnel are fighting the fire, which totaled 15,238 acres as of Monday at 5:25 p.m.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Ely Ranger District is fighting the Broom Canyon Fire in northeast Nye County. Although it was initially reported at 37 acres, BLM said Tuesday it’s a five-acre fire on Currant Mountain in the Currant Mountain Wilderness, about 60 miles southwest of Ely and straight north of Las Vegas.

Smoke might be visible to residents of Currant, Duckwater and surrounding area and motorists on U.S. Highway 6. The fire was likely caused by lightning and first reported at about 8 p.m. on Monday.
