Protect the trees from invasive plants in the South Bend Park this Friday

    2021-07-29

ATLANTA, GA — Volunteers are needed to take care of the trees in South Bend park. They will remove invasive plants such as English ivy, Chinese privet, and kudzu. The event is primarily for those aged 12 years or older.

This program is aimed to promote a healthy plant community and a sustainable forest in the park.

The project is held this Friday, July 30 on two 2-hour-shifts. One is held in the morning, 8 a.m. - 11 a.m., and one in the afternoon, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Volunteers will be subject to physically heavy activity on this project. They must be able to bend, kneel, and lift weight as a limit to participate.

They will need to bring their own gloves and mask, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, allergy emergency medicine, and drinking water in reusable containers.

It's also recommended to wear long pants, closed-toed shoes or boots, and clothes allowed to be dirty. Volunteers can bring their own shovel, mattock, and hand cultivator, even if the organizer will provide them.

Unvaccinated volunteers are required to use a mask and keep a 6 - 12-feet distance from another person. Covering coughs and sneezes with elbows is required, they also have to reduce face-touching by keeping their hair tied or wearing a hat.

People who experience COVID-19 symptoms or have been in in-person contact with people with COVID-19, unfortunately may not yet participate in the project. If the volunteer turns ill during the shift, they can go home.

Project cancelation due to rainy weather will be considered if it occurs throughout the project and if lightning happens. The organizer will contact each participant regarding the cancelation through email.

Those who are 16 and 17 years must bring a signed waiver if they wish to attend without a parent or legal guardian. All volunteers must read and agree to a liability waiver to participate.

Volunteers who are interested in receiving court-ordered community service hours are required to fill a request form. Approval of the form is needed to receive the service hours. Trees Atlanta will decide if the volunteers are eligible.

Volunteers who will fill the shifts must go meet at South Bend Park Pool at 2000 Lakewood Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30315. No restroom is available at the site.

The organizer has limited their participants to 15. Register here.
