Medical partnership’s mobile clinic of UGA provides vaccines for underserved communities

    2021-08-23

ATHENS, GA — The mobile clinic of Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership has addressed the struggle faced by many communities throughout the country in fighting against the COVID-19 virus by administering vaccines in the underserved communities of Athens-Clarke County.

Dr. Shelley Nuss, campus dean of the medical partnership, said as the medical partnership opened its doors in 2010, they have worked to engage and serve the community.

Therefore, according to her, when the COVID-19 vaccine became available, they knew they could expand their services to include providing the COVID-19 vaccine.

In about six months since this mobile clinic had started its vaccination mission in February 2021, nearly four thousand shots have been administered to local residents.

Dr. Suzanne Lester as the clinic director said the motto used by volunteers and operators is “We are still here for you”. Hopefully, this motto can make community members feel comfortable reaching out to clinic staff for assistance.

In addition, volunteers also worked with local agencies to support those positive for COVID-19, including by helping coordinate medical care, meal deliveries, financial services, child care, safe quarantine procedures, and social support programs.

The mobile clinic co-founder Hamzah Ali said while the COVID-19 testing sites were having difficulties with limited COVID-19 testing kits and hospitals were struggling with many COVID-19 patients, the mobile clinic filled the gap by providing COVID-19 testing and medical and financial support to the patients most at risk to the virus.

Included in the several agencies and organizations that are partnered with this clinic are the Department of Public Health, Athens-Clark County government, Clark County School District, ACC neighborhood leaders, Athens Community Council on Aging, and Foothills Charter High School.
