Uniting Chicago: Brandon Johnson's inaugural speech launches a new era of hope and change

    2023-05-16

Brandon Johnson is officially the 57th Mayor of Chicago.

CHICAGO — In his first speech as Mayor, Brandon Johnson sets the tone for what he believes is a "new era" for Chicago.

On May 15, Johnson spoke highly of the windy city but also highlighted issues plaguing Chicago communities and how, as Mayor, he aims to bring a solid foundation to "the greatest city in the world."

He thanked Lori Lightfoot for her "leadership through turbulent times" and reminded everyone that she made history as "the first black woman and the first openly gay LGBTQ Mayor." Johnson said he never thought he'd be on a stage "like this" while growing up in a working-class family of ten and that the opportunity to be Mayor is a humbling experience.

From gun violence to community funding and immigration, Johnson touched on many challenges that Chicago residents have dealt with for years and desperately sought change. It's one of the various reasons why residents longed for new leadership, and Johnson says a new beginning is underway.

"I say this today with deep belief and conviction that our best and brighter days are ahead of us. We can lead Chicago to a new era. Together we can build a better, stronger, safer Chicago. We just have to look deep into the soul of Chicago," Johnson said.

The inauguration speech emphasizes togetherness and the future of the city.

"A brand new Chicago is in front of us. I can't wait to continue to lead this city towards a future that generations to come will look back and see the soul of Chicago that has made it possible for prosperity."
