Some Grant Park streets reopen after NASCAR street race weekend

    2023-07-04

As some streets remain closed, a few opened overnight following NASCAR Chicago's street race.

Since the rainy yet fun-filled NASCAR Street Race weekend event in Chicago is over, residents have one question, "When will the streets surrounding Grant Park and the Loop be accessible?" It's a question that many have asked since before the event began, but now we finally have some answers.

According to a Chicago.gov news release, select streets opened overnight on Sunday, July 2, into Monday, July 3. Most roads are expected to reopen in phases, with most reopening by July 5. Residents should expect inner street closures to remain in effect until July 13 as the track wall, fence, and viewing structures are demobilized.

    Here's what's happening so far:

    • The priority Streets to reopen are DuSable Lake Shore Dr., Michigan Ave., and Columbus Dr. Other street closures will remain in effect as demobilization of the track wall, fence, and viewing structures occurs.
    • Northbound DuSable Lake Shore Dr. will begin reopening Sunday, July 2
    • Southbound Michigan Ave will begin reopening on the morning of Monday, July 3.
    • Southbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Roosevelt Rd will begin reopening on the morning of Tuesday, July 4.
    • All demobilization activity is expected to conclude by Saturday, July 15.

NASCAR Chicago's Street Race was exciting for residents and tourists visiting the city. Although many disapproved of street closures, the race was a massive event. A flash flood warning in the city halted the start of Sunday's race, but it eventually began with NASCAR fans watching in the stands and at home.
