Millions of Americans and thousands of local businesses felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many "mom-and-pop" businesses and nonprofit organizations were left to pick up the pieces, supporting residents when larger companies with resources didn't.

However, many of those businesses had to close their doors forever, unable to keep up with expenses.

That is why Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson, recognizing the crucial role of small businesses and nonprofits, requested a proposal for the Small Business and Not-For-Profit Support Grant Program on August 9. The program intends to support the economic recovery of local businesses affected by the pandemic.

According to a press release, through the request for proposal, Chicago will select an organization to serve as the administrator of the $21.5 million grant program.

They'll collaborate with the city and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) to identify Chicago-area small businesses and nonprofits in need of grants.

Johnson called small businesses and nonprofits the "backbone of Chicago," which drive the economy forward and provide imperative resources to communities.

"This Request for Proposal will secure an administrator for the Small Business and Not-For-Profit Support Grant Program, which will assist in providing grants to businesses and nonprofits. The grants that will serve as a lifeline, helping to navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic and emerge stronger than ever before."
