Publisher’s note: This My Turn originally appeared in the Tuesday, July 13, 2015, edition of the Lassen County Times. I love the crazy things I get to ponder because I have a musician’s sensibilities. A case in point — the recent Susanville Bluegrass Festival relaunched my interest in traditional Irish music — not that bluegrass is especially Irish, but the music of the Emerald Isle can be found at the core of the bluegrass tradition — the fiddle tunes, various varieties of jigs (double jigs, slip jigs, slide jigs, etc.), reels, clog dances, hornpipes and even, I kid you not, polkas.

On page 9C of the June 27 Lassen County Times there’s a picture I took of a tree-service worker pruning the elms along the east side of Gay Street in Uptown Susanville between Cottage and Mill streets. A reader asked why I took the picture. The answer requires some explanation.

The residents of Westwood, Lassen County’s colorful little lumber town, celebrated their logging heritage with the annual Paul Bunyan Days Festival held this year on July 5th and 6th. The event is organized by the Westwood Area Chamber of Commerce and included a street dance, live blues acts, a logging competition, a 5k run and a parade.
Verdict Handed Down in Gruesome Animal Cruelty Incident in Adin
CHRISTIAN LEE CLEVEN-CORWIN, 37, was convicted by jury on July 10, 2024, of 30 counts of felony animal abuse. In October 2022, a deputy sheriff was dispatched to investigate a dog bite that allegedly occurred on the Lassen County portion of an Adin address. Upon arrival the deputy observed various animals in various stages of neglect, living in inhumane conditions, and the property littered with animal carcasses (photos from the Sheriffs Office below).
