An Egyptian Immigrant Takes on Birria and Border Culture Outside Playa de Tijuana’s Centro Islamico
A few blocks from the beachfront row of Jalisco-inspired birria vendors, Egyptian aromatics cut through the traditionally spiced, ancho, and guajillo chile-scented ocean mist of Playas de Tijuana, where Mohammed Gamal sets up shop in front of the Centro Islamico de Baja y Masjid Omar. It’s Tijuana’s most prominent Islamic cultural center and mosque—serving Arabic migrants, Muslim mosque-goers, and longtime residents of the Tijuana borough.
Letter From the Editor: Welcome to TIJUANA WEEK!
If I like you, I’ll give you a taste of L.A.’s Taco Life. But if I really, really like you, I will take you to Tijuana. Somewhere between the bites of guacamole-covered, mesquite-grilled asada tacos, you will find taco euphoria in Tijuana. For the last 17 years, I’ve been privileged enough to eat, drink, and be merry during regular visits to the city that counts the busiest border crossing in the world. My trips to Tijuana were sometimes for work, scouting tacos to be featured on Taco Chronicles on Netflix, sometimes just to drink some of the best craft beer and coffee in southern California. But most of the time, I was going down on my own, just to eat some of the best tacos I’ve had among the 17 states I’ve visited in Mexico.

A ‘Secret’ Thai Seafood Pop-Up With Bangkok-Style Drinking Food and Natural Wine in DTLA
A flickering indigo aura ominously lights the handwritten, five-item menu at Holy Basil’s new weekend Thai seafood pop-up, Yum Los Angeles. It has all the requirements of the next great L.A. pop-up: a simple natural wine menu by the glass, interesting sakes, and it takes place in a location you wouldn’t expect for this caliber of high-quality Thai food. (A dimly lit food court in Downtown L.A.’s Historic Core, where Holy Basil is open daily). Yum Los Angeles is a reminder of Holy Basil’s stripped-down, raw streetside pop-up origins as a business.
