How ‘lake shadow’ plays a big role in West Michigan’s summer weather
Have you ever noticed how it’s typically clearer at the beach than areas inland during the summer? Similarly, you’ll often hear of the possibility of pop-up showers and storms for areas away from the lakeshore. A number of Michigan university medical schools were featured in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, with a notable exception. The rankings released Tuesday, July 23, do not include the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, which ranked No. 17 in the nation in the 2023 rankings. The Ann Arbor school opted to not submit data for the rankings this year, so U.S. News and World Report did not include them on rankings using recent data.

Cherry retailers are booming as growers struggle to hold on
Glen Arbor-based retailer Cherry Republic has built a successful business around a fruit that company President Bob Sutherland calls a “ruby red morsel of joy.”. For Cherry Republic, the tart cherry is much more than a crop, it’s a key piece of the Up North lifestyle that the company sells through its chain of six stores throughout Michigan, including locations in Holland, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Ann Arbor, and Frankenmuth. The stores offer more than 200 products ranging from chocolate-covered dried cherries and cherry candy to cherry summer sausage and cherry-based barbeque sauce. The company, which has 140 full-time employees, also distributes to around 700 stores nationwide.

State Funding to Support Drone Testing, Electric Aircraft Charging in TC
Four projects will receive $6.25 million in funding to help bring advanced air mobility infrastructure to Michigan, including two projects in Traverse City. A $689,500 grant will allow Traverse Connect – in partnership with Munson Healthcare, Northwestern Michigan College, the Freshwater Research & Innovation Center, and more – to test using drones to deliver medical supplies, conduct water sampling and bathymetric mapping, and support emergency response around Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, a $2.6 million grant will allow BETA Technologies to install multimodal chargers for electric aircraft and ground vehicles at four Michigan airports, including Cherry Capital Airport.
Detroit modifying rental ordinance to address property inspections, landlords in violation
(CBS DETROIT) - City officials proposed changes to Detroit's rental ordinance to ensure the health and safety of residents and address landlords who are in violation.The changes were submitted to the Detroit City Council last week before they were introduced to the Public Health and Safety Committee on Monday. Detroit District accepting entries for annual photo contest
The Detroit District invites the public to enter its 9th annual photo contest highlighting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites across the Great Lakes. The top 12 photographs highlighting Detroit District projects on the Great Lakes such as the Soo Locks, Duluth Ship Canal, piers, breakwaters or federal harbors and channels will earn a spot in the 2025 downloadable calendar. The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. July 31, with winners determined by public voting on social media.
