    Roundup: Laurel Junior baseball, MOT Senior softball take state titles

    A three-run fifth inning put Laurel in control before the Sussex County squad downed Naamans, 6-2, to capture the Junior League baseball state title on Sunday evening.

    Laurel moves on to the Eastern Regional, which starts next Saturday in Du Bois, Pa.

    The District III champions, Laurel is now 5-0 in Little League all-star contests after beating District II champion Naamans for the second time.

    Laurel led only 3-1 before its three-run fifth. Tristen Johnson hit a two-out, three-run home run in the outburst.

    Cameron Dieter and Colton Crockett also picked up RBI for Laurel. Dieter threw a complete-game three-hitter with two strikeouts and a pair of walks to earn the victory.

    Major League

    MOT 10, Camden-Wyoming 0: The Middletown-area squad opened the District I tournament with a shutout victory.

    MOT next hosts a winners’ bracket game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

    Camden-Wyoming (1-1) faces Felton (0-1) at 6 p.m. on Monday in Middletown.
    Camden-Wyoming 14, Dover 1: Camden-Wyoming opened the District I tournament with the victory on Saturday night.

    C-W was slated to face MOT on Sunday night in the six-team, double-elimination tournament being played in Middletown.

    Dover is slated to play again on Monday at 8:30 p.m.

    Milford 20, Felton 6: Milford posted the opening-round victory in the District I Tournament on Saturday night.

    Milford was slated to take on Smyrna-Clayton on Sunday night in Middletown with Felton playing again at 6 p.m. on Monday.

    8-10 tournament

    Camden-Wyoming 13, Dover 3: Camden-Wyoming used an eight-run first inning to take control in a second-round District I game on Sunday.

    C-W (1-0) is slated to play again on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Milford.

    Dover (1-1) faces Smyrna-Clayton (0-1) on Monday at 6 p.m. in Milford.

    Softball

    Senior League

    MOT 8, New Castle-Suburban 3: The MOT Senior League softball all-stars moved one step closer to playing in the World Series on Friday night.

    The Middletown-area squad pulled away to an 8-3 victory over New Castle-Suburban to capture the state title after winning both meetings in the best-of-three series.

    The championship earns MOT a ticket to the East Regional in Worester, Mass. At stake in the regional is a berth in the Senior League World Series being played at Lower Sussex.

    Friday’s contest was tied 2-2 before MOT took control with a four-run fourth inning. MOT picked up runs on a single from Kamryn Tuffy and a Bridget Archer double before Mackenzie Landry followed with a two-run single.

    Landry collected three of MOT’s nine hits while Myranda Talmadge pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts. New Castle-Suburban scored twice in the first inning on Kimora Washington’s two-run home run.

    The East Regional is slated to start on July 20. District I champion MOT, which beat New Castle-Suburban 9-6 on Thursday, is now 5-0 in all-star tourney games.
