A woman was hospitalized after being injured in an ATV crash on a backcountry trail between Lava Hot Springs and McCammon on Sunday.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. when an ATV being ridden by the woman, a man and an 8-year-old boy rolled off a steep spot on the Boundary Trail and overturned, eventually coming to rest against a tree, authorities said.

The ATV’s occupants called 911 and Bannock County sheriff’s deputies, Bannock County Search and Rescue, Pocatello Fire Department paramedics and the Portneuf Medical Center emergency helicopter all responded.

Because of the remote area where the crash occurred, the emergency responders had to use ATVs, a Polaris RZR and e-bikes to travel the three miles up the Boundary Trail to the scene.

The responders transported all three of the ATV’s occupants down the trail to a waiting Pocatello Fire Department ambulance, which transported the woman to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Authorities described her injuries as non-life threatening.

The man and boy who were on the ATV suffered minor injuries and were treated by the paramedics at the scene but did not require transport to the hospital.

The names of the ATV’s occupants have not been released.

Authorities said it took emergency responders about two hours to get the ATV’s three occupants from the scene of the crash to the ambulance.

The PMC helicopter landed near the scene but it was determined that the injuries suffered by the ATV’s occupants didn’t require them to be airlifted to the hospital.

Sheriff’s deputies said the Boundary Trail is a difficult trail for ATVs and people should definitely take it slow in that area while operating off-road vehicles.
