Orestes Figueredo-Ortega (12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office).

A Florida man who was out on pretrial release for domestic violence and ordered to stay away from his estranged girlfriend stabbed her to death in front of her toddler, leaving the child alone with his mother’s body in their home.

Orestes Figueredo-Ortega was convicted on a charge of murder in the second degree with a weapon in the death of Delmy Teyul Ba, 21, the 12th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office announced in a news release on Thursday.

“We are pleased with the jury’s verdict holding the defendant responsible for his brutal and fatal attack on this victim,” said Assistant State Attorney Charlie Lawrence, the lead prosecutor in the case. “Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in our community, and this case is a heartbreaking example of the problem. Law enforcement’s quick response and investigative techniques led to the defendant’s timely apprehension. Delmy Teyul and her family have obtained justice for her senseless death.”

Teyul Ba was killed on Sept. 17, 2020, at the Sunset Mobile Home Park in Bradenton, on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida south of Tampa. Prosecutors said Figueredo-Ortega did not go to work that day because he wanted to see what Teyul Ba was doing while he was supposed to be at work, prosecutors said. The two argued. It turned physical.

Figueredo-Ortega choked her. She broke free. He grabbed a knife and stabbed her three times in front of her toddler, prosecutors said.

A sworn statement from a detective with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office outlines the case when deputies responded to a 911 call at 12:46 p.m.

Once there, deputies found Teyul Ba dead on the kitchen floor. She had been stabbed five times — to her chest, abdomen, and thigh. She had a defensive wound to her left forearm and back. No murder weapon was found. The 911 caller said Figueredo-Ortega called her, saying Teyul Ba had stabbed herself and told her to call 911. She said she arrived at the residence about 10 minutes later and found her dead, the document said.

Authorities said mobile home park security video showed Figueredo-Ortega’s Chevrolet Cruze entering the area at 11:09 and leaving by 11:19 that morning.

Authorities said they tracked him down to Miami, seeing his car captured on a toll booth camera heading in that direction at 1:19 p.m. A second witness told investigators he told her that Teyul Ba had a knife and “he had to stab her,” and he was on his way to Miami.

At the time of the murder, he was on pretrial release for a pending domestic battery by strangulation arrest involving Teyul Ba a month earlier. He had also been ordered to have no contact with her then and was on felony probation for a case out of Miami, prosecutors said.
