Inset: Melissa Jubane (Beaverton Police Department). Background: Apartment complex where she and her neighbor, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, lived (KGW).

Police say that a man murdered a missing nurse, and it reportedly turns out that suspect is a nurse himself. Jail records in Washington County, Oregon, show that the defendant, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, 27, is locked up for murder in the second degree.

The victim, Melissa Jubane, 32, missed her morning shift Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, according to cops. This set off an alarm for her loved ones, especially after officers checked out her apartment at 1050 SW 160th Avenue in the city of Beaverton and found no one. Jubane was gone.

“Melissa was not present, and her absence without communication was deemed unusual and alarming,” police wrote.

Cops and her family worked to contact her, but to no avail. It appeared that her phone had been turned off, officers wrote.

“Additionally, searches of Melissa’s bank and credit card records yielded no new information regarding her location,” they wrote.

Authorities ultimately determined that one of her neighbors, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, 27, “was involved in her disappearance,” though they did not elaborate. Now he’s charged with murdering her. Authorities found Jubane’s remains.

Police say they are going to withhold details because of the ongoing investigation.

“While we acknowledge the significant community interest and concern, we must withhold further details to preserve the integrity of the investigation,” they wrote.

It does turn out that Schubert was a nurse himself, though he worked at Providence Medical Center, another Portland hospital, from September 2022 to October 2023, according to Portland ABC affiliate KATU. He never worked for St. Vincent Medical Center, said Providence Health & Services, which runs both hospitals.

Police continue to reach out to the public for more information:

Tips related to this case are still welcome. Please call 503.526.2280 to provide information.

Jubane was a newlywed staying at an apartment in the city of Beaverton, her mother-in-law told Honolulu CW affiliate KHON. Her husband, a Hawaii man, had been staying with her family in Bremerton, Washington, while she looked for work in the area so they could be closer together.

I used to think the death penalty was too easy. Let them rot for 50 years. But the ACLU and others have gained them a gym, rec room and free concert on the taxpayers dime. OSP just hosted a concert by Jellyroll.
