A Texas judge sentenced a 22-year-old man to 50 years in prison for the seemingly random murders of two men about a month apart — and the victims’ family members let him know how upset they were at him during a sentencing hearing Monday.

Kevin Sheffield pleaded guilty to the murders of 64-year-old Mohamed Kamara and 65-year-old Joseph Syas. Dallas police started investigating Kamara’s slaying around 7:30 a.m. on April 12, 2022, when he was found outside his car suffering from a gunshot wound in the 8300 block of Skillman Street, a probable cause arrest affidavit said. His wife told cops he left for work around 5 a.m. but never made it. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he died on May 1, 2022.

Cops didn’t have many leads on the case until they started investigating Syas’ murder on May 17, 2022. Surveillance video showed Syas walking on the sidewalk in the 6700 block of Eastridge Drive. Around 1:40 a.m. a red or maroon Chevrolet Malibu drove by him and made an “immediate U-turn” and headed back toward Syas. Gunshots were heard and Syas fell. Investigators recovered 9 mm shell casings near Syas’ body. License plates in the area put Sheffield’s vehicle near the scene of the shooting.

Detectives also learned that Sheffield lived across the street from Kamara. A search of his home turned up a 9 mm gun and ammunition which came back as a match to the weapon used in the two murders.

On Monday, the victims’ family members addressed Sheffield.

“I hate you. I pray you never see daylight again. I hate you,” Syas’ sister Ceola Syas said, according to a courtroom report from Dallas Fox affiliate KDFW . “I don’t know what your mind is going through. I don’t even know what type of animal you are, but you didn’t have to kill my brother.”

His brother Anthony Syas said he’s been waiting two years to confront Sheffield.

“I wish they’d given you two years because I promise to God I’d blow your f—– head off,” he said, prompting a court deputy to stand up. “I’m not going to touch him. I’m gone.”

Kamara’s family said he moved to the Dallas area from Africa.

“He was in search of greener pastures,” Kamara’s cousin said.

His death came just weeks after his son got married.

“Mohamed was a very kind, hard working, and genuine man,” his obituary said. “He had a good nature, gentle soul, and always wanted the best for everyone he came in contact with. The light he brought to all those around him will be greatly missed.”
