A drunk woman who crashed into parked cars left her severely injured son at the scene of the crash and complained to police that “her chance at a nursing career was over,” cops said in a report from Dallas, Texas, Fox affiliate KDFW.

The 9-year-old son of Monica Tutt, 39, received a gash so deep his skull was visible, and he also had air in his brain, bleeding in his brain, and a fractured skull, officers said.

Authorities said that the crash happened early Wednesday morning on Arden Road in the Oak Cliff neighborhood when Tutt was speeding. According to cops, witnesses said the driver of the suspect vehicle tried to drive away, but it was too damaged.

“[The witness] yelled at the suspect to unlock the car while the suspect continued to yell and scream, attempting to start the car back up,” police wrote. “She stated it was obvious that the suspect was drunk.”

One of the witnesses, Van Hines, told Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate KXAS the suspect driver “tried to crank it up and go.”

    “She was hysterical,” he said.

Officers claim that Tutt’s sister arrived at the scene in her own vehicle, and that Tutt tried to enter the driver’s seat. The sister stopped her from going, they reportedly said.

They took the child, who was unresponsive, out of Tutt’s vehicle, before trying and failing to put him into the sister’s car, cops said.

Paramedics arrived, and the sister and the relative put Tutt in the vehicle before driving off, officers claim.

Ultimately, investigators found Tutt through her license plate and photos of her sister’s license plate, they said. Police arrested her at her sister’s home and brought her back to the scene of the crash for questioning, they said.

She ” kept saying that her chance at a nursing career was over,” police wrote, adding that she “kept stating throughout the interview, ‘I did the same thing I always do,’ and ‘I want my son.” Tutt allegedly said she only had a few drinks that night. In any case, officers claim she failed both a field sobriety test and a preliminary breathalyzer. Police noted that her eyes were watery and glassy, and that her breath smelled strongly of alcohol.

Tutt was arrested back in June 2023 after officers said she was speeding and they learned she had been driving with multiple DWI convictions, according to KXAS.

Regarding the crash, she was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Thursday without bond for collision involving serious bodily injury, and intoxication assault with vehicle serious bodily injury.
