TAMPA, FL — A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering at Tampa General Hospital after being run over by a fleeing suspect just after midnight on Friday.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Kalin Hall, an 11-year veteran of the force, attempted to pull over a black BMW on Bearss Avenue.

“He activated his lights,” said Colonel Frank Losat of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. “The vehicle came to a full stop on the side of the road. Deputy Hall exited his vehicle, and as he approached the car, it fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed.”

Shortly after, Hall located the same vehicle and followed it into an apartment complex.

“The driver of this vehicle chose to drive forward as Deputy Hall exited his vehicle,” Losat explained. “He came around the back of the trunk, and as he approached the car, it accelerated at a very high rate of speed and struck Kalin Hall.”

Deputy Hall sustained injuries to both legs, including a broken left leg in two places and an injury to his right leg. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital for surgery and is currently recovering.

“He is in good spirits, but we also ask everyone to pray for him,” Losat said.

The BMW was found abandoned a short time after the incident, and detectives are actively working to charge the person responsible.

“The vehicle has been identified, and the owner registered to the vehicle has been located,” Losat said. “Our detectives are working diligently with the State Attorney’s office to develop charges against this individual.”

Video footage reveals that Deputy Hall initially attempted to pull over the black BMW just after midnight on Bearss Avenue, then turned off his lights and tried again at Plantation Oaks Drive. The video shows the car taking off and striking Hall as he exited his patrol car. Hall can be heard screaming in pain as he radioed for help, informing dispatchers of his broken leg.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page stated, “Deputy Hall has undergone a successful procedure to insert a rod into his leg after being intentionally rammed by a driver this morning. He also sustained a fracture in his other ankle but is in good spirits.”

The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 813-247-8200.

Please join us in sending prayers and positive thoughts for Deputy Hall’s full recovery.
