Retired Police Sergeant Michael Sugrue is our guest. Michael talks about his career in law enforcement and his life afterwards. He also discusses how he uses his experience to help others. Michael Sugrue embarked on his law enforcement journey within the United States Air Force in 1998, assuming the role of a Security Forces Officer. During his tenure in this position, Michael specialized in a diverse range of areas, including Law Enforcement, Global Force Protection, Anti-Terrorism, Nuclear Security, Foreign Air Field Assessments, and Air Base Ground Defense. With a distinguished service record, Michael concluded his Air Force career with the rank of Captain in 2004. Subsequently, he seamlessly transitioned to the Walnut Creek Police Department, where he contributed his skills and expertise in various capacities. His roles encompassed serving as a Patrol Officer, a Driver Training Instructor, a Field Training Officer, a Detective, an Undercover Narcotic Task Force Agent in Contra Costa County, a Public Information Officer, and ultimately a Patrol Sergeant. Michael was awarded the Walnut Creek PD Distinguished Service Medal in 2014 for his heroic and lifesaving actions during a Fatal Officer Involved Shooting in 2012. Michael recounts a harrowing encounter with a deranged knife-wielding individual and his subsequent legal battle, following his heroic efforts to save lives. After confronting his own traumatic experiences, a retired Walnut Creek Police Sergeant has made it his mission to assist fellow first responders in facing their own fears and finding healing. Although Michael Sugrue hung up his badge years ago, the profound lessons he gleaned from his years on the force will forever be etched in his memory. While these recollections are often painful, he openly discusses them as part of his commitment to preserving lives you can listen to the discussion in the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. Becoming a police officer was Sugrue's true calling. He dedicated over a decade to serving the Walnut Creek community. Even in the seemingly tranquil confines of the East Bay town, Sugrue encountered several deeply traumatic incidents in the line of duty, necessitating the use of his firearm. Sugrue himself nearly became a casualty of another traumatic incident, having had to take a life to protect others. Although he managed to save a couple, his own life was left in disarray. In 2018, Michael made the difficult decision to medically retire. Today, he devotes his time as a Peer Volunteer at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat and serves as an Ambassador for Save A Warrior. Michael is a passionate advocate for raising awareness, preventing, educating, and providing training on Post Traumatic Stress Injury and First Responder Suicide Prevention.
