The biggest diamond in over a century is found in Botswana -- a whopping 2,492 carats

GABORONE, Botswana — The largest diamond found in more than a century has been unearthed at a mine in Botswana. The country’s president showed off the fist-sized stone to the world at a viewing ceremony Thursday. The Botswana government says the huge 2,492-carat stone is the second-biggest ever discovered in a mine. It’s the biggest diamond found since 1905. It weighs approximately half a kilogram. Officials say it's too early to value it or decide how it would be sold. Another smaller diamond from the same mine in Botswana was sold for $63 million in 2016, a record for a rough gem.

German warship blasts Darth Vader anthem in heart of London. ‘No deeper message,’ navy says.

BERLIN — Germany’s navy says there was “no deeper message” in the choice to blast the famed Imperial March — Darth Vader’s theme song in the “Star Wars” films — from one of its warships as it cruised down the River Thames through London. A bystander captured the spectacle Monday on video, which quickly went viral on social media. The song selection made waves across Europe. The warship, the Braunschweig, is named for a city in Germany’s Lower Saxony — an area far, far away from London. The Germany Embassy in London says the warship’s commander is a big “Star Wars” fan. There’s no word whether Anakin Skywalker was aboard.

What’s for breakfast? At Chicago hotel hosting DNC event, there may have been mealworms

CHICAGO — Mealworms may have been what sickened a diner at a Chicago hotel earlier this week during the Democratic National Convention. That’s what Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said Thursday when asked for an update on the Wednesday incident. Police say that multiple suspects entered the Fairmont Chicago, which was hosting a breakfast for delegates at the DNC and began placing “unknown objects” onto tables with food before leaving the area before 7 a.m. Wednesday. Chicago police say one person who ingested the food was treated by medical personnel and released at the scene.

California woman fed up with stolen mail sends Apple AirTag to herself to catch thief

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — A California woman tired of packages being stolen from her post office mailbox mailed herself an Apple AirTag to track the thieves. That’s according to officials Tuesday, who arrested the two suspects after the woman’s mail was stolen again. Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of mail theft early Monday morning and were able to track the AirTag to where the suspects were. They found the woman’s mail and other items believed to be stolen from other victims. The sheriff’s department commended the woman for notifying law enforcement, rather than attempting to contact them on her own.
