Leadville, Colorado, is often dubbed the "highest city in the United States." At 10,158 feet, it certainly is high.

But the highest incorporated municipality in the United States is just down Colo. 9 from Breckenridge: Alma, Colorado. But there's a bit off a twist to these statistics.

Back in 2006, the Town of Winter Park annexed 5,214 acres of the Winter Park ski area so that the Town could have a say in new on-mountain improvements. But, to be honest, the town itself sites at about 9,000 feet.

So, really, at 10,522 feet Alma is top dog when it comes to actual town heights in the United States.

The tight-knit high community sits near the fourteeners Mount Quandary, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Democrat—an excellent place to spend a weekend.

And, the Elevation Music Festival is a great excuse (not that you really need one) to visit Alma.

This year the festival is bigger than ever with 19 musical acts on tap for the Friday–Saturday program.
