'You Can Still Be Masculine and Express Yourself': The Men's Brunch Dialogues on Issues Affecting Black Men Today

    2021-09-21

On September 18, 2021, the One Unified Resource Foundation, Inc. (OUR Foundation), presented its annual Men's Brunch at Lofty Spaces (806 Montgomery St., Dallas, TX), from 12PM to 3PM. The theme for the occasion was "Men About Culture", with the tagline "Return of the M.A.C." The mission of the brunch was to encourage, empower and pamper men who continuously strive to be exceptional leaders in the community.

"Men about the culture are men who are trying to help you go higher, not keep you lower," emphasized Men's Brunch panelist and Assistant Vice President of AT&T, David C. Williams.

The brunch connected local men, recruited mentors and brought awareness to the OUR Foundation mentoring program, as well as highlighted and celebrated several men of distinction who served as speakers on the Men of Distinction, Empowerment & Leadership (MODEL) Panel, including: Comedian and Radio Host, Michael Shawn; Grand Prairie City Council Member Junior Ezeonu; Financial Coach, Dr. Jake; Social Media Strategist Jacob Clayton; Good Life Living Group Founder, Germaine Gaspard; and the Assistant Vice President of AT&T, David C. Williams.

The MODEL panel was moderated by WFAA Channel 8's Tashara Parker, and focused on empowerment and leadership as well as other topics of mental and physical health, relationships, goal setting, finances and image.

"I am happy that this society, especially our culture, can talk about mental health freely," said Michael Shawn to a group of over 75 DFW men when asked to discuss the stigma surrounding therapy and mental health in the Black community. "You can still be very masculine and express yourself," added Councilman Junior Ezeonu.

The Men's Brunch guests enjoyed a cocktail and cigar networking experience, shopping with onsite vendors, a seated brunch, and a 360 photo experience.

"Opportunities to gather like this and communicate are physically healthy, and also causes our mental to grow," panelist Germaine Gaspard reflected at the end of the event.
