Fashion Group International of Dallas (FGI Dallas) will award more than $40,000 in fashion and merchandising scholarships to outstanding college and university students from across North Texas and the region on April 14th at its annual FGI Dallas Scholarship Competition Awards. The event takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Dallas Market Center on the 10th floor.
Fashion Group International of Dallas pays homage to the next generation of fashion designers and merchandisers with its annual scholarship competition event. Heading into its 55th year of tradition in 2023, FGI is proud to have awarded over $1 million to talented students from fashion schools, colleges, and universities in the Southwest region. Through FGI Dallas events, donations, members, community sponsors and supporters – the scholarship donations are made possible.
“It has been an extraordinary past few years as we have been challenged under the unprecedented circumstances of a pandemic,” said Nerissa Hempenstill, Regional Director for FGI Dallas. “FGI Dallas has been very proud to have continued awarding scholarships via virtual events in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In addition to monetary awards averaging $40,000 each year, the FGI Scholarship Competition awarded summer internships with local designers, as well as awarding industrial sewing machines and a study abroad opportunity with the Paris American Academy in Paris.”
FGI Dallas is thrilled to present this year’s theme, Fashion Forward: Motivating Minds in Design, with a first in-person event since the pandemic began in 2020. In addition to awarding scholarship winners, FGI will provide additional learning opportunities for attendees through interactive programming with local fashion professionals.
Maryann Cairns, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at SMU will headline as keynote for the event, with the competition including the Student Symposium, a daytime event for students to interact with and learn from top industry professionals. The evening award show, Student Spotlight, is open to the public and will feature finalists in a live judging Project Runway inspired fashion show and award presentation.
Students submit design and merchandising entries in four apparel categories and two merchandising categories to receive scholarship awards ranging from tuition and expenses awards of excellence ranging from $750 to $5,000.
Award categories and overall excellence awards are given, including but not limited to:
· Fashion Excellence Award: $5,000, FGI of Dallas
· Couture Award: Tuition, including expenses, to Paris American Academy
