The Cornwall Post Office at 7 Boyd St. was closed Monday, Aug. 12, after a burglary occurred at the property sometime between late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

With assistance from state police and Cornwall Borough Police, the incident is being investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service.

The post office was reopened on Tuesday.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service works to protect the postal service, its employees and customers and investigates any dangerous or criminal misuse of the mail such as robberies, burglaries, assaults on carriers, prohibited mailing, fraud and mail theft.

United States Postal Inspector Christiana Kasian said that while the investigation remains open, they currently have leads on suspects and that more information will be released as it becomes available.

"We don't really know the motive until we talk to the people who are doing it," said Kasian. "I mean, they're very broad and overreaching and, I mean, everybody can probably come up with their own motive, I guess, is the best way to put it. But the important thing to know is it is federal government property. It's never a good idea to try to burglarize a post office; it is a federal crime."

While Kasian was not able to provide information on what, if anything, was taken or stolen, or how theives got inside the post office, she said that if any mail was found to be opened customers would be notified by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. To her knowledge, the building itself was not damaged.

Anyone who believes they might have had mail stolen can report it to the U.S. Postal Inspections Service online at uspis.gov or by their 24/7 phone line at 877-876-2455.

Kasian added that this incident serves as a good reminder that if at anyone sees something suspicious or "shady" happening on or around postal postal property, or even around postal carriers, such as someone following a carrier, they should call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to report it at 877-876-2455.

"It's always a good idea just to keep a lookout and to report these things if they think something might be going on," Kasian said.
