    OBITUARY: John Garland Major

    By Jennifer Haley,

    2024-07-18

John Garland Major passed away on July 12, 2024, at age 76.

John was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on July 29, 1947, to Sara Elizabeth Fann and Clyde Garland Major.

He grew up in the Major community in Wilson County and attended the Major School. He played football for Lebanon High School before graduating in 1965. Then he went on to play center for the MTSU Blue Raiders. In addition to playing football at MTSU, John was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.

John graduated from MTSU with a bachelor’s degree in 1969. Following graduation, John went into the insurance business, and he retired as an owner of First Insurance Group in Lebanon.

John was a loyal member of the Blue Raiders Athletic Association and served as president of the Varsity Club. He was on the Board of Directors and President of the Middle Tennessee chapter of National Football Foundation. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, golfing, playing bridge, and listening to classic bluegrass and country music as it reminded him of his childhood. He was a lifelong fan of MTSU football and basketball.

John rarely met a stranger, and he would usually make common connections with someone he just met within minutes. He readily shared his vast knowledge about a variety of topics, and his gift of storytelling kept his audiences enthralled with revolving embellishments.

Scott (Angie) Major, Brad (Jill) Major, and Amy (Rogers) Harrison; daughter-in-law: Catherine Morton; grandchildren: Jackson Major, Noah Major, Natalie Major, Taylor Harrison, Fisher Morton, Elizabeth Morton; sister Amanda (Bruce) Baird; niece and nephew: Charlie (Sarah) Baird and Rachel (Stephen) Manning; cousins: Lillyan Dylla and Alan (Tammy) Major; and many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews; and a great many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Sara and Clyde Major; parents-in-law Elmore and Nell Taylor; son John Morton; and niece Meredith Lea Baird.

The Funeral Service, conducted by Brother Randy Ward, is at 4 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2024, in the chapel of Sellars Funeral Home, Lebanon, Tennessee. A private interment will be in the Major Family Cemetery, Lebanon, Tennessee.
