    Man dies in vehicle submerged in Ohio River

    One man has died after an accident where he drove his vehicle into the Ohio River on Tuesday afternoon.

    According to the Maysville Police Department, several local agencies were dispatched on Tuesday at 2:22 p.m. to a vehicle submerged in the Ohio River.

    MPD, Maysville Fire Department and Mason County Emergency Agency responded at the Maysville River Park boat dock.

    Upon the agencies’ arrival, the vehicle was no longer visible above the water, according to MPD. After further investigation, it was determined by MPD that a silver pickup truck was driven into the river.

    No further information was available during initial investigation.

    MFD then requested assisted from the Ewing Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Ashland Fire Department dive team., according to MPD.

    At 3:56 p.m., a team of fire fighters with sonar equipment began scanning the area in an attempt to locate the submerged vehicle.

    Nearly an hour later, at 4:41 p.m., a Ewing diver located the sunken vehicle and the recovery process began, according to MPD. Ashland Fire Department assisted in the recovery efforts.

    The vehicle was recovered at 5:51 p.m.

    According to MPD, it was later determined that Gerald Rollins, 81, of Maysville, was in the vehicle at the time of submersion.

    “The investigation appears to be a tragic accident that took the life of Mr. Rollins. Mr. Rollins family has been notified of his passing,” MPD stated.

    Agencies and officials involved include MFD, MPD, EVFD, AFD, Buffalo Trace Search and Rescue, John Sims, Ashland, Boyd County and Catlettsburg Emergency Management, Morehead EM, Morehead Dive Team, KYEM Area 7, Automart Towing and Maysville EMA.

    No further information was available regarding the accident at this time.
