Volunteers prepare Franklin Park Elementary for school year
As Franklin Park Elementary School is rebuilt for the 2024-25 school year, volunteers gathered July 18 in the Dunbar community to help finish preparations before Aug. 12. The elementary school first opened as an all-Black institution in 1958. After Hurricane Ian, the School District of Lee County created the Greater Dunbar Initiative, which planned to rebuild rather than modernize the school after being heavily damaged by the storm. The project is estimated to cost roughly $53 million. Volunteers assembled the newly arrived furniture for the school building and first-day packets, WINK News reports.
