Iowa Project AWARE Begins Cleanup Of Skunk River This Week
Over the next week, hundreds of volunteers are canoeing across the Skunk River in the KCII listening area as part of the Iowa Project AWARE annual river cleanup. An acronym for A Watershed Awareness River Expedition, Iowa Project AWARE began with the DNR in 2003 before moving to the non-profit N-Compass Incorporated. Event Director, Nina Marquardt shared the mission of their efforts with KCII. “Iowa Project AWARE is a volunteer river cleanup organization that goes to a different river in Iowa every year by canoe and clean up all of the visible trash and recycle as much as possible. We tent camp together at night and then in the evenings we hold educational programs in camps.”
Lee County Speedway: Tommy Elston wins sixth straight late model feature
DONNELLSON -- Bright, sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted drivers, crews and fans as they filtered in to Lee County Speedway on Saturday evening. It was $5 adult admission night courtesy of the Iowa Corn Growers Association District 9 as well free entry for military veterans paid by American Ethanol.

Christopher Dean Derr, 36, Keokuk, was arrested at 2460 320th St., Lot 33, Keokuk, at 4:45 p.m. Thursday and charged with simple assault. He was taken to the Lee County Jail. Danny Ray Derr, 60, Keokuk, was arrested at 2460 320th St., Lot 33, Keokuk, at 2:44 p.m. Thursday and charged with disorderly conduct (fighting). He was jailed.
High water changing meeting location
The North and South Lee County Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 6. at the Montrose Public Library. Following a short business meeting Kathy Billman will give a program on acquisition to the museum and what they are looking for followed by a tour of the museum.
Support Keokuk's Labor Day celebration
KEOKUK – The Keokuk Labor Day committee has announced the 2024 Labor Day Celebration in Keokuk will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 2. The Labor Day Parade and Celebration has become a great annual event for the Lee County area and with the community’s support, it is improving each year. The theme of the parade this year is “Gone Fishin.’” That theme should spark many ideas for entries and it’s not too early to call in your entry to the parade committee by calling Tina at 319-795-0408 or Cindy at 319-838-2901.
Traffic stop leads to FM man's drug arrest
The Lee County Narcotics Task Force reports the arrest of a Fort Madison man on felony and misdemeanor drug charges. Benjamin Isaiah Mitchell, 40, is charged with possession with the intent to deliver more than 5 grams of methamphetamine, a class B felony; Iowa drug tax stamp violation, a class D felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
