The Village of Empire is arguably the hub of Leelanau County’s tourism industry, situated as it is right next door to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Despite its national and global pedigree, though, Empire is one of the only communities in Leelanau County that does not have an ordinance regulating short-term rentals (STRs).

The search for a missing kayaker on Lake Michigan has come to a somber conclusion as officials announced the recovery of 28-year-old Eric Tyler Gabryel's body off the shores of Glen Arbor. The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a team found Gabryel in 109 feet of water on Tuesday morning, as reported by CBS News Detroit. Gabryel had been missing since approximately 3 p.m. the previous Saturday.

Demographic shifts, local organizing efforts and friendlier legislative maps have since opened doors for Democrats: the once reliably conservative counties of Grand Traverse and Benzie joined neighboring Leelanau County in becoming more competitive.
Body of missing kayaker recovered in Lake Michigan near Glen Haven
GLEN ARBOR — The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office said the body of a missing kayaker was found on Tuesday, three days after he disappeared. Deputies said Eric Tyler Gabryel, from Capac, MI, and a woman both left the Glen Haven area on kayaks Saturday morning. Around 3 p.m., Gabryel’s kayak took on water. The woman told deputies she tried to help but her kayak started taking on water too. A passing boater helped the woman get back to shore, but Gabryel disappeared below the surface. The woman was taken to the hospital. The Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, Glen Lake Fire and Rescue, Michigan State Police, the Coast Guard, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Dive Team, and the DNR all assisted in the search.

LEELANAU COUNTY, MI – The body of a missing kayaker has been recovered from Lake Michigan. According to the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office, Eric Tyler Gabryel, 28, of Capac was found in 109 feet of water off Glen Arbor at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Divers from the Michigan State Police recovered the body with assistance from the Glen Lake Fire Department.
